Mathmas was created in 2026 as a project of codeismycanvas, a larger collection of mathematical and algorithmic artwork.
Colophon (How it's made)
This site is made from hand-coded HTML and vanilla Javascript. The images were plotted in Python using the ziaplot package (another one of my creations). Source code for all the images and the site is available here. The equations on the site are rendered in the browser using KaTeX.
The equations themselves were designed using basic geometry, often as plots of polar equations, implicit equations, or parametric equations, and frequently involving some amount of trial and error. Some shapes employ Bézier splines, commonly used in computer graphics, parameterized into a single equation. Many of these were first sketched in Inkscape before parameterizing into an equation, with the help of Sympy to build up the equation and simplify it into a compact form. Others images use maximum and minimum functions on multiple implicit equations to form the intersection or union of the shapes, respectively. The parametric equation for one special Mathmas shape was formed using a Fourier Transform of points traced along a source image. The finished equations were imported to Desmos to verify and provide an interactive version.
No generative "AI", code bots, or large language model outputs were used in making this site.
Privacy
This site does not use cookies or trackers. No ads. It does not even track which calendar days you previously clicked on; the Javascript just looks at the current date and opens everything in the past. Unless you interact on my social media, I won't know you were here.
